Fall cleanup done at the right time protects a property through the whole winter. Fall cleanup done too early, while trees are still dropping leaves, means doing most of it again a few weeks later. Timing the work around what the trees are actually doing matters more than picking a date on the calendar.
When to actually start
In the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area, most deciduous trees are not fully bare until late October into early November, later still in a mild year. Clearing the yard in early October, while the maples are still dropping heavily, means raking the same section of lawn twice for no real benefit. Waiting until most trees are bare, even if that means starting a couple of weeks later than the calendar might suggest, is more efficient overall and usually takes less total time across the season than an early start followed by a second pass.
Leaves and the lawn underneath
What happens to leaves left on the lawn matters more than most people expect.
- Wait until most leaves are down rather than raking in stages through October.
- Rake or mulch leaves with a mower on a dry day, since wet leaves clump and are far harder to clear cleanly.
- Mulching with several passes of a mower is often faster than raking for a lawn with a light to moderate leaf cover.
- Clear the last of them before the first heavy snow, since a mat of wet leaves left under snow all winter blocks light and traps moisture against the grass, which shows up as dead or diseased patches in spring.
Perennials and garden beds
Beds need their own pass, timed slightly differently from the lawn itself.
- Wait until perennials that die back each year, hostas, daylilies and similar, have gone brown after the first hard frost before cutting them back.
- Cut stems back close to the ground rather than leaving tall dead growth to collapse over winter.
- Clear spent annuals out of beds entirely, since they do not come back regardless of how they are left.
- Spread a fresh layer of mulch over garden beds after cutting back, which helps protect root systems through the freeze-thaw cycles of an Ontario winter.
The gutters, while the ladder is already out
Fall yard cleanup and gutter clearing are worth timing together, since both depend on the trees actually being bare and both need a ladder or at least a tall reach to do properly. Doing them in the same visit, once the leaves are down, saves a second trip up later in the season when the weather has usually turned colder and less pleasant to be up a ladder in.
