Ground fault circuit interrupter outlets, the ones with the small Test and Reset buttons, are required by code in Canadian kitchens, bathrooms, garages and anywhere near water. They trip on purpose the moment they sense current going somewhere it should not, which is exactly why they can seem to fail for no obvious reason, and why understanding what they are actually doing helps before reaching for a screwdriver.
The reset button
Press Reset firmly and listen or feel for a click. If power comes back, the outlet sensed a fault once, tripped as designed, and reset cleanly with nothing more to do. Worth knowing that one GFCI outlet very often protects several ordinary outlets downstream on the same circuit, so a dead outlet in one spot, say beside the sink, can actually be caused by a tripped GFCI somewhere else entirely in the kitchen or bathroom rather than the outlet sitting right in front of you.
If it will not stay reset, finding out why
A GFCI that trips again immediately, or will not reset at all, is telling you there is a real ground fault somewhere on that circuit, and the following order narrows it down without any tools.
- Unplug every device connected anywhere on that circuit, including anything plugged into downstream outlets.
- Press Reset with nothing connected. If it holds, the outlet itself is fine and one of the devices is the fault.
- Plug items back in one at a time, waiting a few seconds between each.
- Stop as soon as it trips again. The device you just plugged in, or the outlet it went into if that outlet is wet or damaged, is the actual problem.
- If it will not hold even with everything unplugged, stop and treat it as a wiring-level fault rather than a device problem.
Testing them monthly
GFCI outlets are meant to be tested regularly, not just when something goes wrong, since the sensing mechanism itself can fail quietly over time while the outlet keeps supplying power normally.
- Plug a lamp or any simple device into the outlet and turn it on.
- Press Test. The power should cut immediately.
- Press Reset to restore power and confirm the device comes back on.
- If Test does not cut the power at all, treat the outlet as though it has no GFCI protection, even though it still works, and have it replaced.
Where the line is for a licensed electrician
Testing and resetting a GFCI is safe and is something every homeowner should be comfortable doing without a second thought. Replacing the outlet itself, adding GFCI protection where there is not one, tracing a fault back into the wiring, or anything involving the panel is licensed electrical work in Ontario. A handyman can swap a like-for-like fixture on an existing circuit, but new GFCI protection or a persistent fault that keeps tripping after the isolation steps above needs a licensed electrician to find and fix at the source.
